What Will You Make Today?

Advanced Institute for Development and Learning

Are you looking for ideas to keep your children occupied while still being educational? Working together to create some goodies in the kitchen is not only a great activity to incorporate a variety of language skills, but it’s also a way to get a yummy snack! Encourage your child to join you in the kitchen to assist in making some cookies, "ants on a log," pizza, or other delicious snacks. While working in the kitchen you can target a variety of language goals such as following directions. sequencing, and basic concepts.

For example:

  • First pour in the sugar, then pour in the chocolate chips”.

  • “Put the cheese in the blue bowl.”

  • “Does the dough feel sticky/wet/hard?”

  • “Put the pepperoni on top of the cheese.”

  • After we put on the toppings, it goes in the oven”.

There are many different visual aides/schedules you can use to assist with sequencing and following directions. Don’t be afraid to jump in the kitchen with your little one and create something delicious. Talk to your therapist if you feel your child would benefit from a visual aid.
