<image:title>Blog - Circles of Communication - What is a circle of communication?</image:title>
<image:caption>The term circle of communication is coined within the DIR (Developmental, Individual differences, Relationship-based) Floortime model of treatment and describes a purposeful dialogue between you and your kid. Recognizing that intentional communication can take on many forms, these circles come in all different sizes. Some may be large and harder to miss while others are subtle, harder to count, but especially powerful for non-speaking children. Entire exchanges can be maintained with affect alone through things like gestures, smiles, and looks–all of which hold meaning when a response is given.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f887e2101a1b744495d112e/2d80740c-2c23-41e1-99e6-7e2e93f911c2/Picture2.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Circles of Communication - How do circles of communication work?</image:title>
<image:caption>A circle can be opened by a small initiation–say, a glance from your child. Building on that glance, you may look back at them. Then, the child is able to close the circle by reaching out or even turning away in response to you. These circles can be subtle, but through them the child learns that he or she is “a person of volition, someone who can actively choose to do things, knowing that [their] actions will cause a result” (Capacity 3).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Circles of Communication - How can Therapists build on these circles of communication?</image:title>
<image:caption>At AID-L, we have several therapists who have completed various levels of training within the DIR/Floortime model, allowing them to implement this into their sessions. A commonly-written connection goal for children is that they are able to both initiate and close circles on their own. Firstly, initiation is an outward sign of your child’s appreciation of their power and understanding of purpose. Some of the most common examples of a child’s attempt to open a circle include reaching out to you, vocalizing, touching your hair, or smiling. Then, the equally important skill of closing circles must be developed. After completing isolated circles with both you and the kid taking turns initiating and closing, the next step is to look for a continuous flow of interaction with your child (or multiple overlapping circles). A study conducted by Harvard’s The Center on the Developing Child validated that lots of back-and-forth “build a strong foundation in a child’s brain for all future learning and development” (5 Steps).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Collaboration: It Takes A Village</image:title>
<image:caption>In this collaborative space, a therapy delivery method known as co-treatment thrives. To clear up potential confusion, co-treatment differs from what is known as concurrent treatment–where one therapist is treating multiple patients within a single scheduled session–in that there is still just a single patient involved. Most simply, co-treatment is when two (or more) disciplines simultaneously treat one patient within a single session. In practice, it has the potential to become much more. Co-treatment takes a holistic approach to a child, recognizing that multidisciplinary collaboration is required to offer solutions that address the diverse needs of the patient as well as their support system. Within one session, overlapping areas of difficulty are able to be grouped rather than isolated. The potential cross-discipline combinations for a co-treat are extensive. As Physical Therapists often share a natural overlap in treatment goals of “neuromuscular and orthopedic deficit remediation” (Mastrangelo, 2016) with Occupational Therapists, co-treatments between Speech-Language Pathologists and either of these two disciplines tend to be most common. These pairings allow for multiple therapy objectives involving different pathways to be targeted at the same time.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f887e2101a1b744495d112e/1c0ea3cc-a6b5-47d5-8aa5-c714b717acf9/Picture+1.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Collaboration: It Takes A Village</image:title>
<image:caption>This application is then an important step towards the eventual mastery of a skill, which suggests another reason co-treatment should be considered: it offers more effective competency achievement. It is important to note that co-treatment should never be used as a tool to ease scheduling difficulties, but, when it is an appropriate course of treatment for your child, it does provide a solution when the attention demands of back-to-back sessions proves challenging. Children are able to still receive the treatment they are require while therapists are able to make strides towards multiple “disciplines’ goals in a shorter period of time” (Weichman, 2014). The benefits of this approach are not limited to the child, though. As this method promotes an interdisciplinary connection, therapists walk away able with a better understanding and respect for other expertise’s contributions to the growth and success of a child. As an aspiring Physical Therapist spending my summer here with the AID-L, I can attest to this learned appreciation firsthand. Every observation has left me with new insight into the breadth of the field of speech and feeding therapies, and I have no doubt that this experience is preparing me to be a better advocate and more knowledgeable provider for my future patients.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Collaboration: It Takes A Village</image:title>
<image:caption>In conclusion, the co-treatment method is just one of several ways the Advanced Institute for Development and Learning is able to incorporate multiple disciplines directly into a treatment plan for your child. As a clinic, we work hard to build relationships across all fields of providers, and are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside them to ensure the best outcomes for our patients. Collaboration as a practice is valued in every field, and, as the AID-L takes a patient-centered approach to treatment, we recognize the importance of ingrained collaboration across disciplines. All that to ask: who will you choose to include in your village?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Importance of Caregivers - Caregivers for disabled children often feel misunderstood and judged by public perception. Not to mention, they can be consumed by stress, social isolation, and financial strain. “Approximately the same number of caregivers reported needs for support in both looking after their own health (including eating and sleeping properly; (20.4%) and in balancing their own needs against the patient's needs (20.7%)” (Kilic and Oz, 2019). Heightened stress levels are commonly associated with a decreased quality of life in caregivers. Many individuals with neurodivergence or disabilities experience additional costs of life. Some of these may include various therapies, specialists’ appointments, transportation needs, or specialty feeding/diet supplies. This is further complicated by socioeconomic factors that contribute to the stress levels of family caregivers, such as income, financial support, and the number of children in their household.</image:title>

<image:caption>We offer our free-play Social Saturday at our clinic for all of our clients and their siblings. All ages are welcome! The children enjoy being able to ride bikes, play hide-and-go-seek, blow bubbles, and go down the slide without any therapist having them do “work”. The therapists enjoy having this chance to bond with the kids and just have fun! No artic words to work on, no stories that the kids have to listen to, no puzzles being completed… unless of course this is what the kids want to do! I personally have such a wonderful memory of pushing a young girl in a swing for over an hour and singing all the songs of Frozen to her, as this is what she requested using her communication device. She had the biggest smile on her face because she got some 1-on-1 attention doing exactly what she wanted to do!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - AID-L’s Social Saturdays - Social Club: for our Pre-Teens and Teenagers</image:title>
<image:caption>A newer addition to our Social Saturdays is our pre-teen and teenagers’ “Social Club”. We offered our first Social Club in November of 2021 and it was a blast!! The big kids met in the other ATS building, so they got to enjoy some time without the younger kids! The purpose of these Social Clubs is to promote friendships within our very own AID-L and ATS community. At the November Social Club, therapists targeted skills that might be required during the holidays, such as at Thanksgiving and over Christmas. For most people, having a meal that you might not eat everyday, talking with family members that you haven’t seen for a while, and playing new or different games is an easy thing to adapt to. However, with most of our clients, these tasks can be extremely difficult. During the November Social Club, the kids and therapists talked about traveling to celebrate Thanksgiving, who they would be visiting / who would be coming visit them, the foods offered (both preferred and unpreferred), sitting at a table with the rest of the family, and conversation starters to use with their family members. An occupational therapist even led the group in a movement break in which they could then lead at their own homes, since many of our kids need to move their bodies every so often. The kids also made Apple Pie Bites and went home with the recipe card to share with their family.</image:caption>

<image:title>Event Calendar - Caregiver Support Workshop - Join us July 23rd for a Caregiver Support Workshop!</image:title>
<image:caption>With the help of a grant from AFL, AID-L will be hosting a Caregiver Support Seminar this summer! Subject matter experts, Crystal Polk from Better Tomorrow Therapy, and Andy Johnson / Anna Prather from Upstate Living Clinic will be providing expertise, and answering your questions. Don't know if this is something for you? If you answer yes to any of the following, we hope you'll join us! Do you feel tired or burned out? Could you use additional resources? Would you like some advice with parenting? Do you feel unseen or alone? Are you looking to connect with other parents and caregivers? This half day seminar is designed with YOU in mind! There will be two sessions with built in Q&A time, stretch break, lunch, and limited childcare. Session topics include Creating Safety and Connection in Relationships, and Family Wellness. This free event is being offered in person and online. When registering, please ensure you are selecting the option that best suits your schedule. We will be offering limited childcare onsite, so if that is a service that will allow you and your significant other to attend, sign-up soon! You'll notice there are 3 separate sign-up options. In person, virtual, and childcare. If you plan to bring your child, you must also register them for childcare! While we will be providing lunch for the parent caregivers, please pack a labeled lunch for your child.</image:caption>
